![]() CONSTANTIA AS A DESTINATION... Constantia, a region of great natural beauty and charm, lies in the historic heartland of the Cape Peninsula, this being the location where agricultural estates were first established by the earliest European settlers in the late 17th century and the viticulture industry founded a few years later. Virtues of the “luscious sweet Constantia wine” were thereafter extolled by kings and emperors- also through the pages of Jane Austen and Dickens. Today Constantia still harbours some of Cape Town’s oldest and finest wine farms, and other more recently established boutique wineries, which produce award-winning wines to rank among the world’s best. It is also home to prestigious golf estates, and many historic and stately properties, which display a rich variation in fine Cape architecture. from old to modern. Deceptively convenient to the urban centre, Waterfront and other major amenities, this verdant valley is predominantly residential, yet retains its rural character. Cradled in the shadow of the south-eastern slopes of the Table Mountain range, the Constantia Valley is dominated by extensive vineyards, forrests and parklands, bordered to the south by the Silvermine Nature Reserve and to the north by Kirstenbosch Gardens and Wynberg. There is an extensive well developed network of walking paths, cycling tracks and picnic areas which encourage exploration of the spectacular scenery of the Table Mountain National Park with its unique fynbos and extraordinary floral diversity. ”The mountain” is an international drawcard at any time of the year, especially spring, - a constant magnet no less for local hikers who never tire of the choices in discovering exciting new routes to breathtaking vistas. The gentler lower slopes are host to horse riders, mountain bikes, and on weekends also to the popular craft and farmers’ markets. With its mild temperate climate, and appeal of outdoor leisure, Constantia nevertheless presents a vibrant community with many options for urban and cultural activities. It possesses sophisticated shopping malls and a wide selection of shops and restaurants to suit all moods and tastes, among the best in the country. The Constantia wine route should not be missed, and for golf enthusiasts the prestigious Steenberg is a must. The nearby False Bay coastline also provides the option of several popular beaches and the nostalgic charm of Kalk Bay and St James. And so the list continues… It is little wonder that the timeless appeal of this lovely valley continues to find favour among world travelers today, as with the pioneers and elite of yesteryear.
